Nature Journaling: The River

written by Micah J. Murray | published on October 1, 2026

Nature journaling with my feet in the river, almost out of water but still singing, still cool, still alive. Wonder is nature journaling too, standing on the flat dry rocks where the river used to be and will be again.

Nature journaling usually involves drawing but today I am content with words. How do I draw the riversong? How do I draw the cool vibration in the bottom of my feet as the energy stream that is the river ripples around the energy field that is my body?

This river is part of me, and I am part of it. In this river I have wept and I have smiled, I have cooled off in the summer and frozen myself in the spring, I have played with Wonder and I have worried endlessly about my problems, I have made fires and I have walked on ice.

In this river I have read tarot cards, I have released ancient wounded ghosts that lived inside my chest, I have baptised my friends with the benediction of the sun, and I have been baptised by the cold water of April in a tin cup.

In the very first manifestation of SOLIS I wrote: “a creek rushes across the land, wide and beautiful… in the winters snow piles its banks… and in the summer we make that creek our home” and this has come true in my body.

I have made this river my home — not only in summer, but in the brown chilly spring when the water rushes in from the melting snow and nearly overflows the banks, when the low trickle of the stream is filled with fall colors, and in the winter when the water still runs under the ice and I put my head to the river to hear its song, bubbling out of miniature ice caves as stunning as any natural wonder, as long as one has eyes to see.
